This North Africa overland is the first part of our larger overland expedition to China, it departs from Tunis in early March and is a trip of an exploratory nature. The crew on this trip are some of our most experienced and our expedition vehicle will be newly built and equipped especially for this trip. Please also be aware that as stated above this is an exploratory overland expedition and as such anyone booking on this trip should expect that there will be times that things do not go according to plan and there WILL BE hold-ups and some unexpected hassles along the way.
Over the 19 day duration of the trip we will be camping, some of which will be in the extreme heat of deserts or the cold of mountainous regions. The hotels we use will be small locally owned pensions and bed and breakfasts and may often be of a very basic standard.
But this should be regarded as part and parcel of being among the first to partake in such a ground breaking expedition and this in turn is reflected in the cost of the trip. Please also be aware that any and all information regarding this overland trip is only available from our website - there are no printed brochures - apart from our "detailed trip notes" which contain information about where to join this tour, a more in-depth itinerary, what to bring with you, visas and vaccinations, optional excursions etc and which can be ordered or viewed online as well.

Days 1 - 6: Tunis has a strong medieval Arab past and well worth spending a couple of days here before your trip begin. Day 1 is Dougga, the largest and most dramatic Roman site in Tunis. We continue after lunch for the short drive to Le Kef, a mountainous fortified Kasbah village. We visit the old Roman city of Haidra, small oasis towns of Nefta, Tozeur and visit Matmata, well known for its troglodyte villages and then head South to Remada and the desert border with Libya.
Days 7 - 11: We cross the border into Libya at the small town of Nalut, which has an exceptional qasr (fortified granary reached though underground tunnel), Our first major port of call in Libya is the UNESCO World Heritage listed oasis town of Ghadames. We now cross the Hamadat al-Hamrah desert to Al Qaryat and then drive to Leptis Magna.
Days 12 - 14: We now drive along the Afro Mediterranean coast to swim from one of the many deserted beaches. Our next major stop is at the ancient Greek city of Cyrene. From Cyrene it is a short drive to Tobruk. Here we visit the well kept Commonwealth Cemeteries, containing 6128 graves of mainly British, Australian, New Zealand and South African troops.
Days 15 - 19: From Tobruk we cross into Egypt and visit El Alamein. Next we stop at Alexandria enjoy some of the excellent seafood or take a trip to the Catacombs in the eerie subterranean Roman Necropolis! The beaches and diving here are also excellent with wrecks of Roman Galley's, French Warships, German U-boats and Cleopatra's Palace.
A half days drive away brings us to Cairo.
