Week 1 Anchorage is our meeting point and is Alaska's only true city, but even here wild moose still chomp through suburban flower gardens and graze alongside the highways. A short drive away the tiny port town of Whittier is set impressively amongst jagged mountains, pristine glaciers and a glistening fjord from where we have the chance to explore the Prince William Sound by cruise boat. Breaching humpback whales, pods of orcas, porpoises, seals and sea otters are all common-place here as well as over 200 species of birds. Keep an eye out for bears on the shore! We continue on through the Kenai Peninsula, famous for its salmon rich streams, before arriving in the fishing port of Homer. Check out the Salty Dawg Saloon while you are here! From here we now ferry over to Kodiak Island where we have a few days to enjoy the natural splendor which is home to the world's largest grizzly bears! You can also rent float planes here which will take you out to see some of the most remote parts of the Island where you are sure to see the grizzlies fishing for Salmon. Back to the Top
Week 2 Back on the mainland we now head north for the interior heart of Alaska taking in the dramatic remains of the Independence Mine along the way. A thousand lakes and tundra capped hills line our way to the wonderful Denali National Park, alive with browsing bears, lone wolves and herds of grazing moose and caribou. We base ourselves here for a couple of days allowing time to explore the magnificent hiking and biking trails on offer. We feel that our journey through Alaska would be incomplete without a visit to the far north so we continue on to the town of Fairbanks where we prepare and provision ourselves for the Dalton Highway. This desolate road will take us into the Arctic Circle, onto the tundra and up to the town of Deadhorse where you have the option to take a tour around the US's most productive oil fields and stand on the frozen Arctic Ocean. This northern route has proved to be a wildlife viewing highlight with grizzly bears, musk ox, arctic fox, caribou, moose and black bears being spotted. Back to the Top
Week 3 Returning to the south we now head for the quirky settlement of Chicken. Once a bustling mining town fewer than 20 people now reside here but travellers are well catered for at their infamous bar. Many a strange thing happens in Chicken but remember 'What happens in Chicken stays in Chicken!' We continue on to Wrangell St Elias National Park which is considered to be one of the world's best with plenty of opportunity to spot black and brown bears as well as all the other native Alaskan mammals. The park is particularly well-renowned for its stunning mountain scenery and abundant hiking trails. Weather permitting we will now visit a mushing farm where you will have the opportunity to experience travel by sled with a team of huskies being the driving force! This is a great day out! Our last drive will now take us back to Anchorage via some of the most beautiful and striking river and mountain scenery you will probably ever see. Only once you have experienced Alaska will you realise that it really is the Last Frontier, and there are far too few places left like it in this world... |
